MTV Turns 30 and Three Decades Later Their Impact on the Music Industry Is Evident

Thirty years ago today, a monumental musical event occurred. At 12:01 AM on August 1, 1981 a new station came on the air, called MTV. The first images broadcast on the new music television station were the launch of Apollo 11. The first video was “Video Killed the Radio Star” by the Buggles and the rest as they say was “History”. Music lovers, especially the young high school age and college age, were now going to be able to see their favorite musicians and bands more often than the usual Grammy awards broadcast or special guest appearance on a late night show, American Bandstand or Soul Train.

Teenagers and young adults now think of MTV as the channel to view reality TV, series aimed at the young adult, and short broadcasts once a day of the top videos. But where are those videos? What makes MTV “THE” music television station? For those that were aware of the new MTV channel it was revolutionary. Musicians became creative with their videos that held much more than what is seems is seen today, despite more technology. Getting cable was a must just to have MTV.

For those wanting to revisit the nostalgia of the good ol’ MTV days, there will be a re-broadcast of the network’s first hour as well as marathon playing of music videos from the 1980′s. However, this won’t be available on MTV, but rather VH1 Classic. It will be a three day celebration beginning on the VH1 Classic channel on Saturday at 6:00 AM EST.

Mark Goodman, was one of MTV’s DJs (disc-jockey) which later was dubbed as a VJ (video-jockey), meaning they had invented a whole new genre of music hosts, recalled the growth of MTV in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. He said, “Part of the job was to hang out with cable operators and convince them to pick up MTV. Within six months we started getting these stories back from small towns in the Midwest and in the South where people were going into record stores and asking for the Buggles, who had been off the shelves for about three years by 1981. I also remember doing an appearance in Cheyenne, Wyoming at a record store where thousands of people showed up. I said, ‘What’s going on?’ They said, ‘You.’ I was completely blown away, and I said, ‘Okay, it’s working.’”

He added, “I think we only had 300 videos at first. Which is why you saw Andrew Gold every few hours. We also had lots of Rod Stewart, and even acts like Charlie Daniels. One of the early success stories was Duran Duran. We started playing ‘Planet Earth’ early on and it got them wide exposure. We started to hear about British bands coming to the States and being shocked by how many people showed up.

“As far as I know, MTV isn’t doing anything in particular to celebrate the 30th. MTV doesn’t want people to think about how friggin’ old they are. The people watching now were so, so not born when we launched. They were light years away from being born.”

The days of videos the likes of “Thriller” by Michael Jackson are long gone, just as MTV being a music video television station is long gone. Instead, videos are common, and can be downloaded and watched over and over, or viewed whenever you want on the Internet. Who would think MTV would change so much or have such a large impact on music in general? Then again, who could have predicted a television station based solely on short performances of music would evolve and give rise to several other video based stations. Change occurs, but for those that can recall the good old days and the thrill of viewing a favorite video after hours of sitting and waiting in front of MTV, it will never be the same. Happy 30th Birthday MTV!

Online And In Control: Web Marketing Ideas

More and more people are realizing the potential in online business, and that makes Web marketing a topic of increasing importance. The most difficult part of this method is finding how to get started with Affiliate marketing. This article will give you some tips so you can make some money with Internet promotion.

Offer a short-term incentive or promotion to boost your site’s PageRank. If your deal is hot, deal-tracking sites will send visitors to your site without you having to lift a finger. This is very much like “loss leaders” in the retail trade, with the promotion intended to boost profits later.

TIP! A compilation of your client email addresses is vital. Ask your customers if they would like to join your email list when they make a purchase, and add a form on your website to let them sign up.

If you plan on having a flashy website then you need to make sure that it is easy to navigate as well. Remember, you have just a few seconds to grab a visitor’s interest when they arrive at your site, so making a good first impression is key. If your site doesn’t look interesting by then, your potential customers are probably gone.

Make sure any tags on your web site are directly associated with its core content. The title tag shows at the top left corner of the browser window. The text there conveys exactly who you are to the potential viewer. If your tags are weak, then the response you get from search engines and consumers alike will also be weak.

To help convince your audience that they should purchase your product, link them to a page that offers relevant information in an engaging way; perhaps through a video. This will allow them to feel educated about their potential purchase. If you do this, they will know that educating them is more important to you than selling to them.

TIP! Watch what the competitors are doing and consolidate your ideas from the knowledge you gain. If you can picture yourself buying from them, they are being successful and you should try to incorporate some of their techniques into your own strategy.

You must get more subscribers if your goal is making more money. Try split testing to see what sort of web design works the best. Offer one version of your webpage to one group and another version to another group. You can measure popularity by the number of people who subscribe to each.

If you are interested in having a trusted site, write a FAQ. This gives quick answers to most questions pertaining to your site and business, while simplifying the process of your customers getting the help they are looking for. Customers are much more likely to buy from a business that addresses their informational needs and questions, and not just a product.

Be sure to include your signature on both personal and business e mails. This is the calling card for your business on the web, and you should distribute it at every opportunity. This is a great way to connect with people and seem more accessible, which will in turn boost revenue and traffic to your site.

TIP! Writing some frequently asked questions can often be helpful. Provide a well-thought-out response for each question, and don’t be afraid to self-sell where appropriate.

Consider using a web host that allows you to save all your emails and helps you organize your customer data. It is important to protect your emails. Avoid using those free email services since they tend to delete all the old messages. Pay for reputable companies to archive and maintain this sensitive information.

You need to work toward your goals every day. What kind of articles do you want to publish? What directories do you want to publish your articles to? There are directories that vary in their requirements for their articles. They may wish for you to have a certain number of words, for instance. Remember this before you submit any content so you avoid wasting time getting rejections.

Design and adhere to a budget for building your website and marketing it online. Set realistic goals and give yourself enough time to reach them. By setting goals and continuing to attain and apply knowledge pertaining to Web marketing, you should realize success in your business ventures.

What Has VH1 Become Since Hitting it Off on Satellite TV?

Article by Jon Jacobson

When music television first appeared as a concept in the 1980s, with MTV premiering, it seemed that audiences nationwide now had the chance to watch and keep up with music with ease. Sure, such programs like the “Ed Sullivan Show” and “American Bandstand” had previously broadcasted music to the world on a nightly basis, but when music television came out to cable and satellite TV viewers, it brought with it a revolution in the industry.
As MTV popularized music videos, more and more artists and bands began taking to the new format, realizing that a hit video would correlate to an increase in fans and subsequent CD sales. And since a new niche in the market had been discovered, competition – of course – followed, most notably VH1.
Standing for “Video Hits One,” VH1 hit the cable and satellite TV mainstream in 1985 with the goal of capturing the older demographic that MTV had been overlooking. While its competition focused on rock and roll, VH1 decided to play music videos and highlight artists from the mellower side of the industry, including such artists as Whitney Houston and Elton John. Jazz and R&B became the general genres that VH1 embraced, but within 10 years the network’s ratings began to slip.
In the mid 1990s, VH1 shifted its focus to all types of music to attract a wider audience. While MTV focused on more music-related programming, VH1 spent most airtime highlighting music videos and artist biographies, most notably seen with such weekly programs as “Pop Up Video” and “Behind the Music.” At the same time, VH1 dedicated a lot of time trying to spread the love of music, seen especially with its “Save the Music” foundation, as well as commemorating many big name celebrities with its “VH1 Divas” programs. But, there ratings still managed to drop.
Since 2003, VH1 completely switched its focus, deciding to follow MTV into the pop culture genre. Now, if cable and satellite TV viewers tune into the station to see music videos, either a top 10 countdown or one of the many celebrity-themed reality programs will actually greet them. In fact, the majority of programming on VH1 these days has almost nothing to do with the actual music industry. Almost every show on the pop culture channel acts as a second chance for washed-up or B-star celebrities to try and get their name back in the limelight. The channel has truly lost its way.
Unfortunately, VH1 has retained strong ratings for the last few years and has thus actively competed with MTV. Not to mention that with both the transition to the high definition format as well as the release of a whole slew of diversified channels, such as VH1 Classic, the network has truly found their niche in the market.
Granted, VH1 does use their sister channels to play music videos, but the shear fact that the primary station had to switch formats to idiotic pop culture programming to appeal to the masses of cable and satellite TV subscribers is just sad. Whether this is a critique on American audiences, as in giving people what they want, or merely a criticism to the heads of VH1 for not sticking their ground and staying true to their music-only goals, is up to you. Either way, for anyone who wants to view music videos on television, your best bet is to utilize the “On Demand” feature.

The Talent Code: Greatness Isn't Born. It's Grown. Here's How.

What is the secret of talent? How do we unlock it? In this groundbreaking work, journalist and New York Times bestselling author Daniel Coyle provides parents, teachers, coaches, businesspeople—and everyone else—with tools they can use to maximize potential in themselves and others.

Whether you’re coaching soccer or teaching a child to play the piano, writing a novel or trying to improve your golf swing, this revolutionary book shows you how to grow talent by tapping into a newly discovered brain mechanism.

Drawing on cutting-edge neurology and firsthand research gathered on journeys to nine of the world’s talent hotbeds—from the baseball fields of the Caribbean to a classical-music academy in upstate New York—Coyle identifies the three key elements that will allow you to develop your gifts and optimize your performance in sports, art, music, math, or just about anything.

• Deep Practice–Everyone knows that practice is a key to success. What everyone doesn’t know is that specific kinds of practice can increase skill up to ten times faster than conventional practice.

• Ignition–We all need a little motivation to get started. But what separates truly high achievers from the rest of the pack? A higher level of commitment—call it passion—born out of our deepest unconscious desires and triggered by certain primal cues. Understanding how these signals work can help you ignite passion and catalyze skill development.

• Master Coaching–What are the secrets of the world’s most effective teachers, trainers, and coaches? Discover the four virtues that enable these “talent whisperers” to fuel passion, inspire deep practice, and bring out the best in their students.

These three elements work together within your brain to form myelin, a microscopic neural substance that adds vast amounts of speed and accuracy to your movements and thoughts. Scientists have discovered that myelin might just be the holy grail: the foundation of all forms of greatness, from Michelangelo’s to Michael Jordan’s. The good news about myelin is that it isn’t fixed at birth; to the contrary, it grows, and like anything that grows, it can be cultivated and nourished.

Combining revelatory analysis with illuminating examples of regular people who have achieved greatness, this book will not only change the way you think about talent, but equip you to reach your own highest potential.
